Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, flourished as one of the centers of Japan in the wax industry from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. It is also a symbol of Garyu SansoGaryusanso (pictured above) is gradually gaining recognition as a world-class tourist destination that Ozu City is proud of, and Torajiro Kawachi, a highly successful wax exporter, decided to spend the rest of his life here. It took 10 years of planning and 4 years of construction, and was built with passion and even provided tuition fees for craftsmen from local Ozu and Kyoto to further improve their technical skills.
