What is Candelilla Row?
It is a natural plant wax obtained from Spurge. Candelilla grows in the desert regions of northern Mexico and southern America. Deserts grow in highlands where there is a large difference in temperature during the day, with temperatures ranging from 45 degrees Celsius in summer to -20 degrees Celsius in winter. Candelilla wax is secreted to suppress water evaporation, allowing it to survive in harsh environments. Candelilla wax can be collected throughout the year. Because it has excellent gloss, is resistant to temperature changes, and does not easily break, it has been used as a base material for cosmetics such as lip balms and lipsticks.
Characteristics of the derived plant (candelilla)
The stems, 5-10 mm in diameter and 15-100 cm long, come out from underground rhizomes and have almost no leaves. It forms small bushes, the trunk is greyish-green, and the surface is thinly covered with wax. The genus Euphorbia, which includes candelilla, is protected by CITES as ``at risk of extinction if trade is not regulated'' (corresponds to CITES Appendix II). Permits and certificates based on the Washington Convention are required when importing and exporting Candelilla wax raw materials and products used, but due to its high quality, it continues to be used.
